Gerry Connolly on Trump’s Pick for EPA

There’s been a lot of disappointment from environmental advocates about Trump selecting Scott Pruitt to be the next head of the EPA. Not only has he been in the pocket of big oil, but he’s made it his mission to go after the agency since he became Attorney General of Oklahoma.

Pruitt has used his position to start a series of lawsuits against the agency trying to block federal measures to reduce smog and other toxic emissions from power plants that can be found all across his state. According to Pruitt, these regulations should be made at the state level instead of the federal level — a position that makes him a very odd choice to lead the federal agency in charge of the regulations.

He’s also gone after the EPA’s Clean Power Plan, which is a major part of the Obama Administration’s efforts to fight climate change and meet the country’s obligations under the Paris Climate Agreement.

It therefore shouldn’t be surprising that Congressional leaders who care about the environment are speaking out against Pruitt’s selection. Rep. Gerry Connolly is one of those leaders and released the following statement:

“Donald Trump’s selection of Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt to head the Environmental Protection Agency is the latest in a Cabinet of Horrors. This appointment is a devastating setback for public health and safety, addressing global climate change and is nothing more than a giveaway to the Koch Brothers and Big Oil industry. The decision to appoint an individual who has repeatedly tried to stymie and rollback important environmental regulations – and a climate change denier no less – to head the very agency charged with protecting public health and safety is reckless, cynical and must be opposed.”
